When to go to hospital or call 000
Some problems need urgent medical care, not a dentist. Call 000 (triple zero) or go to your nearest hospital emergency department if you have:
- trouble breathing or swallowing
- swelling that is spreading across your face, towards your eye or down your neck, especially with a fever
- bleeding that has not stopped after about 10 minutes of firm pressure with a clean cloth or gauze
- a serious head, face or jaw injury, or a suspected broken jaw
What to do until you can see a dentist
Toothache
Rinse gently with warm water and avoid very hot or cold food and drink. Follow the label on any over-the-counter pain relief you can safely use, and call us as soon as we are open.
Knocked-out adult tooth
Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly with milk or saline and do not scrub it. If you can, gently place it back in its socket and bite on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in a small container of milk. Call us straight away because time matters. Do not try to put a baby tooth back in.
Chipped or broken tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water and keep any large pieces in milk to bring with you. If a sharp edge is cutting your mouth, sugar-free gum or dental wax can cover it temporarily.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the crown if you have it and avoid chewing on that side. Sugar-free gum or dental wax can cover the gap temporarily. Do not use glue.
Cut or bitten lip, tongue or cheek
Rinse gently and press firmly with a clean cloth or gauze. If bleeding does not stop after about 10 minutes, or the cut is deep, go to a hospital emergency department.
Frequently Asked Questions

Are you open on weekends?
Saturdays are by appointment only and we are unable to take walk-ins. If you have a serious emergency outside opening hours, follow the hospital advice on this page.
What should I do about a toothache until I can be seen?
Rinse gently with warm water, avoid very hot or cold food and drink, and follow the label directions on any over-the-counter pain relief you can safely use. Check with a pharmacist if you are unsure.
Does a chipped tooth always need urgent care?
Not always, but a chip can leave a sharp edge or expose the inner tooth. If you have pain, bleeding or an edge that is cutting your mouth, call us. Otherwise let us know and we will advise how soon to be seen.
